Ask Dr. Kirby

Dr. Kirby will answer the most frequently asked questions on this website each month. If you would like to ask him a question, email him at DrKirby@seriouscomposer.com

Q. Should AIT candidates receive a hearing test in a room where ambient sounds "leak" in?
A.  No. Audiograms should be done in a sound-treated room that eliminates ambient sounds. Otherwise, these sounds will artificially induce "peaks" in the audiogram. This may cause erroneous notch filter settings on the AIT device.

Q. Can AIT techniques be used to diagnose and treat clinical depression?
A. Absolutely not. Under no circumstances should AIT or audiology be used for either the diagnosis or treatment of depression or other serious diseases. Contrary to statements published to this effect, there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support these dangerous claims. If such a medical condition is indicated, a health professional should be consulted immediately.

Defective AIT Devices

All of the Berard Audiokinetrons we have tested over the past four years as a normal part of our repair service do not have functional 8 kHz filters. It appears that this is a design flaw that, in all probability, affects all Audiokinetrons worldwide. Instead of an 8 kHz center frequency, the Berard device's 8 kHz control causes narrow-band filtering at 9 kHz - 10 kHz.

After reviewing the research literature on AIT, we know of only one research project that included the testing of filters prior to the study. This methodological flaw may invalidate AIT research involving the efficacy of narrow-band filtering. Additionally, it calls into question, all studies comparing Berard devices with other AIT devices. Needless to say, this defect also compromises service to AIT clients.

If you are a practitioner or researcher  who would like to test an AIT device, please contact Serious Composer, Inc. If you do not have access to the appropriate test equipment, we sell a laboratory test CD that will permit you to determine the accuracy of your narrow-band filters.

NOTE: Because the audio electronics of Audiokinetrons have been encrypted by removing the ID numbers from the IC chips, we cannot repair or calibrate defective filters. Please do not send us any AIT devices unless you have made arrangements in advance with Serious Composer, Inc.
